Peace. Love. Order. Dome.

That’s the motto that the Order has given the residents of Dome 1618 to live by. Natalia Greyes is a resident of Dome 1618, a covered city protected from the deadly radiation that has poisoned the world outside for four generations. Nat never questioned the Order, until one day she sees a stranger on the outside of her dome. Now Nat wants answers. What else might her government be hiding from the good and loyal people of Dome 1618?

Meet the Author

Melanie McFarlaneWhether it’s uncovering the corruption of the future, or traveling to other worlds to save the universe, Melanie McFarlane jumps in with both hands on her keyboard. Though she can be found obsessing over zombies and orcs from time to time, Melanie has focused her powers on her upcoming YA trilogy: THERE ONCE WERE STARS and her YA urban fantasy series: SUMMONER RISING.

My Thoughts on the Book

There Once Were Stars is like most dystopians in that it has an overbearing government system… but that is where the similarities end. There is a dash of political intrigue, a smidgen of a class system, an infection and a cleansing war, and so many more ingredients that add up to a recipe for an awesome book. This was definitely a refreshing take on the dystopian genre since the last two that I’ve read (Divergent and The Maze Runner) just kind of fell flat for me.

This book had me hooked from the very beginning with its intense, on-your-toes world building. As the reader you are thrust into the world knowing only what Natalia tells you. There is a dome over her head, there is an order to keep the peace, and no one should be able to survive outside the dome. Well, one of these things is not like the other, and we quickly learn that nothing in this world is as they say it is and Natalia is one curious girl. Thrust into a job that she doesn’t want in the government building she has never been in, Nat is starting to learn that everything isn’t what it seems.

Now, let’s talk characters. Nat is so headstrong and feisty but she also has a lot of internal struggling going on with coming to terms with each new bit of information she is given. Her perspective is really fun to read from because of her sass but also you really feel like you are a part of her and her decisions. Nat has a very interesting support system with her Grandparents, her Grandmother seems burdened but her Grandfather takes everything in stride. Evan, Jak, and Xara are also really great characters and they each add so much to the story. They are all just so loveable and made the book that much more fun to read. I really appreciate how the romance in handled in this story as well, it doesn’t overpower the dystopian DNA of the book and Nat actually responds the way a normal human would. No weird insta-love here.

Melanie does a great job building up the world in a way that keeps you from guessing what direction this book will take because there are so many ways it could go. Little by little, one discovery leads to another and Nat finds herself in the middle of something HUGE! Could there be life outside their Dome? Is the radiation gone? What really happened to the last expedition team? You have to read to find out!

I am such a huge fan of this book and I just can’t wait to read more from Melanie! I hope everyone will give this book a try and go order it now!
